What is Seam Welder

A seam welding machine has one or two motor-driven wheels rotate to create a series of overlapping spot welds on sheet components to achieve air and/or liquid proof sealing on the welded part. The current passes through these rollers and the components to be welded are pressed in between them. The electrical resistance within the electrode rollers generates heat that joins the weld materials continuously.

Benefits of Seam Welder

Easy to Operate

This process is quite easy and requires basic operation skills. Compared to spot and plasma arc welding processes, the welder can do it without any complications. Because of its simplicity, seam welding helps achieve high production rates. It's reliable and offers very few challenges to the welder. Also, this process can be used to join similar and dissimilar metals.

Maximum Utilization of Current

Distortion of heat is minimal because heating is confined to a small area. Current is only turned on at regular intervals reducing wastage. Current passes intermittently through the electrodes to form a series of overlapping welds. The use of low current means electrodes can have a longer life compared to spot welding.

Suitable for Liquid and Gas Tight Containers

Resistance seam welding works perfectly for liquid and gaseous joints. Steel drums, radiators, and tin cans are produced through this process. It creates airtight and watertight seals and is the best process for fabricating welds that need water or air leakage protection. Because of the creation of continuous welds, gases and liquids cannot leak.

Seam Welding Is Fast

If you want a fast weld process, seam welding is everything. With the whole process automated, seam welding seam faster than both spot and projection welding. Automatic transfer, loading, and unloading of components make the entire process easy and fast. Also, automation reduces labor input while multiplying output. Weld speeds are set for machines rather than human operation.

Minimal Pollution

Seam welding is one of the processes with no gas formation. Also, seam welding does not emit any fumes. Filler material, which causes pollution, is not utilized in seam welding.

Formation of Clear and Durable Welds

It gives a sturdy, durable weld with excellent reliability. Seam welds generally have better external appearance due to the absence of indentations. Joints are forged due to pressure and heat applied forming a durable weld. Tools produced through seam welding have excellent mechanical properties. Seam welds join a large surface area thus making strong welds. Besides, it is possible to produce parallel and seam welds simultaneously.

Application of Seam Welder

Ship field

Various structural parts of ships, such as bottom plates, cabin plates, etc., all require seam welding.

Bridge field

Bridge main beams, connecting plates, cross beams and other structures all require welding technology, among which seam welding is the most common one.

Automobile manufacturing field

Automobile body, chassis, wheel frame and other components require welding technology, including seam welding.

Steel structure field

Various steel structure parts in the construction and decoration fields are often connected using seam welding technology.

Types of Seam Welder

Transverse seam welding machine

The weld formed is perpendicular to the electrode arm. The rotation axis of the roller electrode of this type of welding machine is parallel to the electrode arm, as shown in the figure "Transverse seam welding machine". It is mainly used to weld long welds of horizontal workpieces and circumferential annular welds.

Longitudinal seam welding machine

The weld formed is parallel to the electrode arm. The rotation axis of the roller electrode of this type of welding machine is perpendicular to the electrode arm. It is mainly used for welding short welds of horizontal workpieces and longitudinal straight seams of cylindrical containers.

Universal seam welding machine

That is, a vertical and horizontal dual-purpose welding machine. Seam welding machines generally consist of a body, a pressurizing mechanism, a transmission mechanism, a welding resistor transformer, a power regulating mechanism, and a welding circuit. Except for the electrodes and transmission mechanism, other parts are basically similar to spot welders.

Features of Seam Welder

Seam welding, like spot welding, is a welding process that combines thermal and mechanical (force) effects. In comparison, its mechanical (force) effect is insufficient in the welding process (except for step seam welding), and the faster the welding speed, the more obvious the performance.

Seam welding is composed of overlapping welding spots, so the shunt during welding is much more serious than spot welding, which makes it difficult to weld thick plates of high conductivity aluminum alloys and magnesium alloys.

The surface of the roller electrode is prone to adhesion damage, which will deteriorate the surface quality of the weld. Therefore, the modification of the electrode is a particularly noteworthy issue.

Since the cross-sectional area of the seam weld is usually more than twice the longitudinal load area of the base metal (the thinner the plate, the greater the ratio), damage must occur in the heat-affected zone of the base metal. Therefore, seam welded structures place little emphasis on joint strength and mainly require good sealing and corrosion resistance.

What Are the Working Methods of Seam Welding Machine

First, continuous seam welding

When the electrode of the roller rotates continuously, the weldment should keep moving at a constant speed, then the current of the welding machine will pass continuously and uninterruptedly, and a welding spot will be formed every half circle, and its welding speed can be maintained for one minute. 10-20 meters. However, since the quality of the surface of the object welded by this method is very rough, the practical application area is very small.

Second, intermittent seam welding

This welding method is to keep the weldment rotating at a constant speed, and the current of the welding machine will pass through intermittently. In this way, a solder joint will be formed every time it is turned on and off. Depending on the thickness of the plate being welded, the welding speed can reach 0, 5-4, 3 meters per minute. This welding method is widely used, and it is mainly suitable for closed welds of gas and oil in the production of ferrous metals.

Third, step-by-step welding

Move the solder joints intermittently to allow the welding current to pass through. Each time it passes and moves, a weld is formed, and forging pressure can also be applied. The formation of the joint of the object to be welded is very similar to that of a spot welder. However, the welding speed of this welding method is very low, and it can weld 0, 2-0, and 6 meters in one minute, and it is only used for the welding of aluminum alloy or magnesium alloy with high sealing performance.

How Seam Welder works

Transmission equipment provides electrical energy

The work of the seam welder originates from the AC power provided by the power transmission unit. This electrical energy will be transmitted to the transformer, and after conversion by the transformer, the voltage will rise to a certain level.

The company is a 'Member of China Interior Decoration Association', 'National Excellent Enterprise in Air Interior Decoration', and was rated as 'Top Ten Brands of Electric Curtains', with 7 product patents, and it is well-known in the industry.

Rectifier converts electrical energy into direct current
The rectifier portion of the seam welder converts this AC power into DC power, making it easier to weld. After passing through the controller, the DC power is provided to the welding mechanism.

The electrode and the workpiece form an arc
When the electrode contacts the workpiece, an arc is formed. When welding, the electrode should be in close contact with the workpiece so that the arc releases energy and melts the metal surface.

The arc transfers energy to the workpiece
The arc provides an energy transfer mechanism by which energy is transferred to the surface of the workpiece, causing it to become hotter than before.

Metal melting and merging
When the workpiece is heated, the metal will melt. With the help of suitable pressure and other parameters, metals can be welded together to form high-strength connections.

How to Maintain Seam Welder

Clean
During use, the seam welding machine will be affected by various pollutants such as dust, grease, and welding slag, which will affect the accuracy and sensitivity of the sensor. Therefore, it is necessary to clean the seam welder regularly. When cleaning, wipe the sensor surface with a clean brush or soft cloth. Avoid using chemical-containing cleaners or corrosive items that may damage the sensor.

Adjustment
The seam welding machine may have errors or deviations during use and needs to be adjusted in time. Before adjustment, it is necessary to understand the movement pattern of the welding robot, determine the position and angle of the sensor, and the shape and position of the weld seam. Then adjust the sensor according to the weld condition and sensor indication. Note that the adjustment process should be done slowly and gradually to avoid major mistakes.

Examine
Seam welders may be damaged or malfunction during use and require regular inspection. The inspection includes checking whether the electrical connection of the welding robot is loose, whether the various parts of the seam welding machine are damaged or worn, and whether the sensor circuit and controller are working properly. If problems are found, they should be repaired or replaced in time.

Maintain
In addition to routine cleaning, adjustments, and inspections, seam welders require regular maintenance. Maintenance includes replacing the sensor's components, lubricating the sensor's moving parts, and regularly calibrating and inspecting the sensor. Regular maintenance can extend the service life of the sensor, improve its reliability and stability, reduce failures and downtime, thereby improving production efficiency and reducing costs.

FAQ

Q: Where is the seam weld?

A: A seam weld is typically located along the edge where two metal sheets are to be joined. It's a continuous weld that runs along the length of the seam created by the overlapping edges of the sheets. Seam welds can be found in products like tanks, boilers, and various containers, where a durable, long-lasting joint is essential.

Q: What is the strongest weld pattern?

A: The strongest weld pattern depends on the application but often includes a groove weld or a combination of weld types to create a multi-pass weld. For seam welding specifically, a continuous pattern is strong as it forms a constant, leak-proof seal along the seam. The integrity of the weld also depends on the preparation of the metals and the precision of the welding process itself.

Q: Is seam welding expensive?

A: Seam welding can be costly in terms of initial investment for the equipment, which is typically specialized and designed for industrial use. However, the operation costs can be lower over time due to its efficiency and automation capabilities. When considering the cost, it's important to factor in the savings from reduced labor and the high quality of the continuous welds.

Q: What is the common joint for seam welds?

A: The most common joint for seam welds is the lap joint, where two pieces of metal overlap and the seam runs along the top edge where they meet. This joint type is preferred for seam welding because it allows the roller electrodes to move smoothly along the seam and create a consistent and strong weld.

Q: Does seam welding make a difference?

A: Yes, seam welding makes a significant difference in applications where continuous, airtight, or watertight seals are required. It provides a consistent and strong joint that can withstand pressure, which is crucial for containers holding liquids or gases, and it ensures the integrity and safety of the final product.

Q: What is the principal of seam welding?

A: Seam welding Seam welding (Figure 16.82) is similar in principle to spot welding and uses rotating wheel electrodes which roll the overlapping components between them. The welding current passes intermittently through the electrodes, forming a series of welds that overlap one another.Seam welding is robust and is more durable because of the amount of surface area that is joined by a weld. Seam welding produces an extremely durable weld because the joint is forged due to the heat and pressure applied.

Q: What are the techniques of seam welding?

A: In addition to lap seam welding, seam welding has variations such as butt seam welding that continues heating butted surfaces by applying pressure and passing a welding current to weld the seam, and mush seam welding that uses roller electrodes to mush up slightly overlapped edges of base materials by passing an .

Q: Is seam welding continuous?

A: Seam welding separates into continuous seam and pulse seam. The continuous seam is an overlap of spot welds without cool time while pulse seam is an overlap of spot welds with cool time but so short that the spots are still connected together. Both continuous seam and pulse seam sometimes can run on the same machine.Joints are forged due to pressure and heat applied forming a durable weld. Tools produced through seam welding have excellent mechanical properties. Seam welds join a large surface area thus making strong welds.

Q: How fast is seam welding?

A: Consumable Wire Resistance Seam Welding.Suitable for welding coated and stainless steel, this process is highly reliable and is able to achieve welding speeds of over 70 metres per minute. While the consumable wire adds to the cost of this type of welding, the expense is offset by the scrap return value of copper.

Q: What is the minimum distance between weld seams?

A: Here are some guidelines from a few commonly used codes and standards: American Welding Society (AWS) D1. 1: The minimum distance between welds should be at least four times the thickness of the thinner part joined, but not less than 1 inch (25 mm).In this welding, continuous spot welds can be formed by using wheel type or roller type, or disc type electrodes instead of tipped electrodes as shown in the figure.

Q: What is the thickness range for seam welding?

A: Seam welding is relatively fast method of welding producing quality welds. The process is limited to components of thickness less than 3 mm.Seam welding is a more expensive process than other welding methods. Requiring a continuous wire to weld two metal pieces together.

Q: How much does it cost to seam weld a car?

A: And location and specifications for the welding also determine the car welding cost. For a small job (a small hole/patch/rust weld repair) at a garage, you can expect to pay around £125. For a more complex job such as a car chassis repair, you can expect to pay around £1,000.

Q: What are the problems with seam welding?

A: An unavoidable problem of seam welding is that some of the current 'leaks' through the completed weld. As the electrode rollers rotate, they do not need to be lifted between each spot, as with spot welding. In all cases the surface temperature momentarily approaches red hot. This would be about 1200 deg Fahrenheit( 650 DEG C). The weld wheel or flood cooling will cool this immediately, if there is time between welds.

Q: What is a seam welder used for?

A: Resistance seam welding is used for joining two sheets of metal together: In laser seam welding, the part to be welded is moved or rotated under the laser focus head allowing laser spot welds to overlap.

Q: What is the hardest welder to use?

A: Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding is widely considered the most challenging welding process to learn. The sheer complexity of the technique requires more practice and focus to master than other less-technical welding methods. TIG welding also results in some of the strongest and sturdiest welds in the industry.

Q: What is the hardest welder to learn?

A: TIG welding
TIG welding is the hardest form of welding to learn for a variety of reasons. The process of TIG welding is slow and takes time to get used to as a beginner. A TIG welder requires a foot pedal to feed the electrode and control the variable amperage while maintaining a steady hand at the welding torch.

Q: Can you weld over an existing weld?

A: It should be remembered that welding over weld metal is actually a very common occurrence. Multi-pass welds after all are manufactured by welding over weld metal! There are also many accepted procedures in which welds overlap.

Q: How big a gap can you weld?

A: Depends on a lot of things including thickness of base metals, job requirements and operator skills. Generally you want tight fit up, but 1/4 inch is common on inspected structural jobs. Sometimes a filler plate is added and another weld made. Sometimes an engineers approval is required.

Q: What are welding seams called?

A: In metalworking, a welding joint is a point or edge where two or more pieces of metal or plastic are joined together. They are formed by welding two or more workpieces according to a particular geometry. There are five types of joints referred to by the American Welding Society: butt, corner, edge, lap, and tee.

Q: What is the difference between seam welding and projection welding?

A: Projection welding: A type of spot welding where the welding points are raised projections on one of the metal sheets. Seam welding: This process involves welding along a continuous joint or seam between two metal sheets. The strength of seam welds is designated as the minimum acceptable shear strength in pounds per linear inch. The strength value is placed to the left of the weld symbol.
